The museum was built at Yorktown Battlefield, which has been an important landmark since 1781 when George Washington’s army defeated General Cornwallis’ British forces here. Now it marks where Americans declared their independence from Great Britain during the War for Independence between 1775 and 1783. Visitors can see five original buildings including earthworks used by French soldiers who fought alongside the Continental Army led by George Washington against British troops under Lord Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805).
