Questions

Suffolk real estate FAQ

Suffolk is an independent city, so it is not part of any county. It took its current shape in 1974 when Suffolk merged with the city of Nansemond. Today it is the largest city in Virginia by land area.

Suffolk Public Schools serves the whole city. It runs three high schools: Nansemond River, King’s Fork and Lakeland. On SchoolDigger’s 2026 Virginia rankings, Nansemond River High placed 99th of 331 and John Yeates Middle placed 61st of 416.

The citywide rate is $1.06 per $100 of assessed value through June 30, 2027. A home assessed at $350,000 would owe about $3,710 a year ($350,000 / 100 x $1.06). Taxes are paid in two halves, due December 5 and June 5. A few special districts, like the Route 17 district, carry a higher rate.

From North Suffolk, the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) takes you straight into Newport News. Off-peak, Newport News Shipbuilding is roughly 25 to 35 minutes away. Rush hour on the bridge-tunnel can add a lot of time.

Yes. Suffolk has frontage on the Nansemond and James rivers, plus large rural areas in the south and west. That makes it one of the few places in Hampton Roads where acreage is still common. Check flood zones and septic or well details on any rural or waterfront lot.
